Heddon Mill

NORTH DEVON

Located on the North Devon Coast, AAVA reconfigured and extended an existing barn to provide a high quality 4 bedroom dwelling with a generous entrance and cloaks area, 4 bathrooms, kitchen-dining – living area and utility room.

The building was opened up to accommodate large sliding windows onto a generous terrace. The extension contains the master bedroom and entrance hall – all clad in corrugated steel and set on ‘stilts’ to allow for any potential flood water to flow under the building without any detrimental effects.

The decision to retain and retrofit the existing barn with a modest extension was to reduce the embodied carbon. The existing barn benefitted from a new highly insulated roof, natural wall and floor insulation to improve the performance of the house. The timber frame extension was extremely well insulated with airtight construction. There's an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) in conjunction with underfloor heating to help reduce the in-use carbon emissions.
