Hartley Cottage

DEVON

The young family have deep farming heritage, an outdoor lifestyle and a keen eye for contemporary detail. We worked with them to create a four bedroom home that reflected this, their growing needs as a family and the rural context of the house. With a strong focus on sustainability and local craftsmanship the timber frame extension was built from beautiful Douglas fir trees that were felled, milled and fabricated locally. The bespoke kitchen was built by a Wiltshire based cabinet maker from locally sourced birch, with the worktop crafted from an elm tree that had fallen in the family's own woodland.

The home has high levels of natural insulation, excellent air-tightness and triple-glazed windows. A sustainable heating system was also installed. Natural finishes, including various timbers and lime plaster, were chosen for their environmental benefits and their ability to create a warm, inviting living environment for the family and their beloved dog.
